Ultralight backpacking

  • Ultralight Backpacking and Hiking

    What is Ultralight Hiking/Backpacking/Tramping?

By carrying lighter and more multi-purpose equipment, ultralight backpackers aim to cover longer distances per day with less wear and tear on the body. For this reason, Ultralight hiking is also often referred  to as fastpacking. Adventure racers participate in events such as the Eco Challenge, Primal Quest, and Raid Gauloises. Ultralight hiking gear is particularly useful when thru-hiking a long-distance trail.

What is the biggest goal in preparing for a Fast-Packing or Ultra light backpacking Hike? Find ways to Reduce Backpack Weight! Trimming pack weight can be achieved 1 item at a time or by building a new system from scratch. The payoff is appealing: more spring in your step, less gravity tugging at you on uphill switchbacks.

Ultralight backpacking is a style of backpacking that emphasizes carrying the lightest and simplest kit safely possible for a given trip.

Light and ultralight are generally defined as base pack weights below 20 pounds (9.1 kg) and 10 pounds (4.5 kg) respectively in the US; elsewhere the definitions are commonly given as lightweight being under 10 kg, and ultralight under 5 kg.

Base pack weight (the weight of a backpack plus the gear inside & outside it, excluding consumables such as food, water, and fuel, which vary depending on the duration and style of trip) is reduced as much as safely possible, though reduction of the weight of consumables is also applied.

For comparison, traditional backpacking practices often results in base pack weights above 30 pounds (14 kg), and sometimes up to 60 pounds (27 kg).

    Why hike ultralight?

Or, the better question to ask - why suffer if you don't have to? Why would anyone want to carry a 40 to 50 pound pack? Yet, for the average hiker, this is about what they carry for a one week trip.

A pack this heavy causes plenty of problems:

    • Slow, tedious hiking
    • Exhaustion, irritability, and low morale on the trail
    • Increased chance of injury - sore back, sprained ankles, blown knees, sore muscles, bruised and blistered feet
    • Tired, cross people make bad decisions, sometimes with serious consequences.
    • Slow hiking leaves less time for fun stuff - relaxing in camp, fishing, staring at clouds, skinny dipping, side trips

All this detracts from enjoying the outdoors - the reason you went in the first place.

Why are the Ultralight / Watertight First Aid Kits so Special?
Jason Cartwright, President of Adventure Medical Kits makes it very clear - "We DO test our kits and the Ultralight and Watertight series, not only internally, but we have professionals test them as well:

The Ultralight / Watertight .9 has been tested, abused, and approved by adventure racers in the Eco Challenge, Primal Quest, and Raid Gauloises.

...If you are familiar with Adventure Racing, our kits are the official kits of adventure racers.  They race through any climate, multiple challenges (paddling, running, biking, climbing, etc) and I have personally spoken to many of the teams who have praised our kits for being waterproof.  I have witnessed some of our testing which has included submerging the kit in a 5 gallon bucket of water for over a week and everything inside staying dry.  We also take a lot of pride in our materials and we have waterproof coating on the ULWT series bags.  The zipper is the one place that could leak, but with the waterproof bag materials and the dryflex bag inside (if properly sealed) ensure that the contents will stay dry.

The dryflex bag is the real key to the kit being watertight and if sealed properly, is basically waterproof.

This is one of our most reviewed and most popular series of kits and a kit series doesn’t become that popular by under delivering on its brand promise.
