National Preparedness Month culminates with the September 30 National PrepareAthon! Day.
Twice a year, on September 30 and April 30, America’s PrepareAthon! promotes National PrepareAthon! Days to bring attention to our progress toward creating a more resilient Nation. America’s PrepareAthon! is a national, year-round, grassroots campaign for action to increase community preparedness and resilience through hazard-specific drills, group discussions, and exercises.
America’s PrepareAthon! prepares people for earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, winter storms, and active shooter.
The 10 Ways to Participate in America’s PrepareAthon! infographic highlights activities you can do in support of the campaign. You can also find out where preparedness events are happening in your community and join in.
Individuals, families, communities, faith-based organizations, schools, and businesses are all encouraged to participate and prepare for the hazards that are common to their areas. 3 Steps to Prepare for Hurricanes
As we progress into the Hurricane Season, each of us need to take inventory of our supplies, assess our readiness, and plan for safety in a storm.
According to FEMA director, Craig Fugate, his should begin with three basic steps:
- Know your evacuation zone. Evacuation zones are areas that may be impacted by hurricane flooding. Many communities have designated evacuation zones and routes to get citizens to safety. This information can often be found on the websites of your state, county, or town emergency management offices. If a hurricane threatens your community and local officials say it's time to evacuate, don't wait.

Download the FEMA app. With the FEMA smartphone app you’ll have all the information you need to know what to do before, during, and after a hurricane. You can also receive weather alerts in your area from NOAA’s National Weather Service, find lifesaving safety tips, and have access to disaster resources should you need them. You can download the app from the Apple App store or the Google Play store. The FEMA app is also available in Spanish.
- Make a plan and build a kit. When a hurricane hits, communications systems can go out, transportation can be limited, and it could be days before emergency responders are able to reach your community if you need help. Making a plan - and practicing that plan - helps to ensure you and your family are safe and ready for these challenges. Your plan should include:
- Family communication plan: Talk with your family members about how you will contact one another in an emergency. Know how you will check in with family members in different locations, how you will care for children or members with access and functional needs, and how your family will get in touch if cell phone, internet, or landlines don’t work.
- Emergency Supply Kit: A ‘go kit’ is a bag that contains basic items you and your family may need, during an emergency. Kits should contain non-perishable food, water, and other supplies, such as flashlights, local maps, and a battery-powered radio, to last you and your family for at least 72 hours.
- Pets: Many local shelters do not permit pets, but laws require them to accept service animals. Know what you will do with your pet if you need to evacuate.
Hurricane Season just began June 1st and runs through November 30th - Prepare Now!

Two years after Sandy
Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Northeast two years ago, creating loss and hardship for thousands of Americans and causing business closures and financial strife. Hundreds dies, and Billions of dollars in damage occurred during what was one of the worst Hurricanes in US History.
What have we learned and where are we at after this lesson?
Preparedness is certainly a more common idea today - no longer thought of as something that only "weird" survivalist nuts think about. Many families have learned about the risks in their areas and made basic plans and preparations. Smart businesses have plans both for caring for their employees and visitors should they need to shelter in place, but also for how to maintain business continuity and assure they still have a business after whatever next calamity occurs. Government agencies have stepped up their procedures and protocols to jump in faster at the next disaster... what else?
Mass media has had fun and profit... from Prepper shows to melancholy documentaries and articles. For a time, attention was diverted from political faux pas and scandals to the needs of humans.
schadenfreude
[shahd-n-froi-duh]
noun: satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune.
Origin 1890-1895: German, equivalent to Schaden harm + Freude joyPreparing is a part of living - and continuing to live... Self-reliance is understood not to be an essential part of being. No longer are Americans subscribers to the "PollyAnna" belief set that no matter what befalls us, the Government will take care of it. While they may, we certainly know now that it will neither be immediate, complete, nor likely "comfortable" assistance we receive from government agencies.
POLLYANNA or POLLY – A person who is in denial about the disruption that might be caused by a large scale disaster. Someone that is in denial that TEOTWAWKI could occur and remains cheerfully optimistic, even confronted with evidence to the contrary.
TEOTWAWKI – (Pronounced “Tee-ought-walk-ee”) – “The End Of The World As We Know It.” This phrase has become extremely popular with Preppers.
Hurricane Sandy was an unfortunate reminder of the importance of preparedness for everyone regardless of where you live or work.

Of course, you should Check your Emergency Supplies, too:- Count your stock... is it enough?
- Check your expiration dates (food, water, batteries)
- Keep cash on hand
- Don't let your gas tank get below half-full

What did you do for National Preparedness Month?
We're half way through October, with Ebola, Bats, Ghouls and Goblins on our mind.
Let's take a look back at September. September was National Preparedness Month. We spent all of September and most of August bring you information about disaster, survival, preparedness... Sure, this was about getting ready and leading up to America's PrepareAthon on September 30th - but there's a bigger goal. As part of the National Preparedness Community and as Weather Ready Nation Ambassadors, it is our goal to help heighten awareness, self-reliance, and preparedness for whatever may come you way - year-round. Just because we aren't inundating you with Survival Tips this Month, don't forget to "be Ready" ever day. See all the great information in our National Preparedness Month Blog
What did you do for National Preparedness Month?
Thanks to you, this year's National Preparedness Month was our most successful yet! Millions of American's took action to be disaster aware and helped us spread the word about the importance of preparedness in our homes, workplaces and communities at large. Here are just a few examples of the great things that happened last month!
In September, Ohio based organization Veteran's First held a lunch time speaking engagement with Retired Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, discussing the readiness of South East Ohio veteran population and to coordinate assistance in case of emergency. The veterans in South East Ohio are eager to volunteer on a group effort, to be of benefit to their community at large in case of disaster or emergency. On Tuesday September 23, 2014, Orange County, California tested the AlertOC emergency mass notification system. Twenty different cities within the county participated in the system scheduled mass outreach. Members of the Laguna Niguel CERT Team staffed the Public Information Hotline to take calls from Orange County Community members. To put things in perspective, over 30,000 calls went out for the City of Laguna Niguel alone. Disaster, Survival, Preparation

Located at Matanuska-Susitna College in Anchorage, AK, the 5th Annual Emergency Preparedness Expo had 35 exhibitors both indoors and outdoors including the state of Alaska's earthquake simulator, live fire extinguisher training, and a classroom set up as a Disaster Experience. They planned for 6 months and had a Healthy Communities Grant and local business supporters. Building on lessons learned from previous years, this year's Expo featured interactive training had many activities for children including a poster contest supported by the schools with prizes awarded by the mayor at a Borough Assembly meeting. -
The Ready Campaign
The Ready Campaign established four universal building blocks of emergency preparedness:- Be informed,
- Make a Plan,
- Build a Kit and
- Get Involved.
America’s PrepareAthon! builds on this foundation by encouraging millions of Americans to focus on a simple, specific activity that will increase preparedness.America’s PrepareAthon! is a national community-based campaign for action that focuses on increasing emergency preparedness through hazard-specific drills, group discussions and exercises. During National Preparedness Month (NPM) in September individuals and communities are encouraged to take action by planning a National PrepareAthon!
